Conor McGregor Withdraws from Presidential Race in Ireland
The famous MMA fighter, Conor McGregor, has decided to withdraw from the electoral contest for the presidency of Ireland, calling the electoral process “undemocratic”. McGregor, 37, faced an uphill battle to appear on the October ballot. He needed the support of 20 members of parliament or the backing of four local authorities, a considerable challenge. The former UFC champion tried to leverage his large social media following and the support of influential figures, such as Elon Musk, to secure a nomination. However, on Sunday he announced the cessation of his efforts.Although McGregor remains a popular figure on social media, his position as a political figure in Ireland is questionable. In November, he was found liable in a sexual assault case related to an incident in 2018, where he was accused of raping a woman in a Dublin hotel. A recent survey by the Sunday Independent in Ireland revealed that only 7% of respondents would have voted for McGregor. McGregor (22-6) hasn’t fought in the UFC since suffering a broken leg in a TKO loss to Dustin Poirier in 2021. He has expressed interest in fighting at the UFC event planned at the White House in the United States in the summer of 2026.“I want to assure the people of Ireland that this will not be my last election,” McGregor wrote on X. “You will see me campaigning again in the future, fighting for your rights and representing the best interests of our nation.”
