Victor Robles Receives Suspension After Minor League Incident

Seattle Mariners outfielder Victor Robles has been suspended for seven games, according to an announcement made by Major League Baseball this Friday. The sanction is the result of an incident that occurred during a rehabilitation assignment in the minor leagues. Robles, initially facing a 10-game suspension after throwing a bat in the direction of an opposing player, will begin serving his suspension in Friday’s game against the Cleveland Guardians. In addition to the suspension, Robles has also been fined an undisclosed amount. The incident took place on August 17, while Robles was playing for the Triple-A Tacoma team. In the third inning, Robles was nearly hit by a pitch from Joey Estes, pitcher for Las Vegas. Following the incident, Robles threw his bat in the direction of Estes and was ejected by umpire Joe McCarthy. In his previous four games with Tacoma, Robles had been hit by pitches on three occasions, including once by Estes. After the pitch, Robles headed toward the mound and was restrained by the umpire and his teammates. Robles apologized for the incident.

I want to take a moment to sincerely apologize for my recent reaction on the field. I let my frustration get the better of me and I understand how that could have affected not only the game, but also the energy and respect that we all work so hard to maintain.

Robles also added that the long rehabilitation process and the absence from the game for much of the season had been a challenge both physically and mentally. In addition, he mentioned the recent death of his mother as a factor that has made the situation difficult. Robles had been out of action since April 6 due to a dislocation in his left shoulder. After returning to the Mariners and playing in four games, where he performed 2-for-13 with two RBIs and a run scored, his appeal was heard.
