Austin Riley to the Injured List: Atlanta Braves’ Losses

The Atlanta Braves have placed star third baseman Austin Riley on the 10-day injured list due to an abdominal strain. The news was confirmed this Saturday, causing concern among fans. Riley, who is a two-time All-Star, suffered the injury during the fourth inning of Friday’s game, where the Braves achieved a 6-5 victory against St. Louis. At 28 years old, Riley has had an outstanding season. He’s batting .274, with 14 home runs and 48 RBIs in 93 games. He leads the team in hits, with 104, and is second in runs scored, with 51. However, he also shares third place in the National League in strikeouts, with 113.

Faced with this absence, the Braves called up infielder Nacho Alvarez Jr. from Triple-A Gwinnett. Alvarez, 22 years old, debuted in the Major Leagues last season, playing eight games with Atlanta and batting .100 (3 for 30).

In addition, the Braves added left-handed pitcher Joey Wentz to the roster, after sending right-handed pitcher Nathan Wiles to Gwinnett after Friday’s game. Wentz, 27, was claimed by the Braves on Friday, coming from the Minnesota Twins. He was originally selected in the first round of the draft by Atlanta in 2016. This season, Wentz had a 2-1 record with an ERA of 6.88 in 25 relief appearances between the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Twins.
