Tyler Stephenson to Injured List with Thumb Fracture

Cincinnati Reds catcher Tyler Stephenson has been placed on the injured list due to a small fracture at the tip of his left thumb. The injury initially occurred while catching a pitch from pitcher Hunter Greene last week. Stephenson, who is batting .226 with nine home runs and 36 RBIs in 72 games, aggravated the injury while participating in Nick Lodolo’s bullpen session on Tuesday night, before a game against the Los Angeles Angels. This led to X-rays, which confirmed the fracture.

You can play with tolerance, but the part about catching the ball, that makes it a little more difficult,” commented manager Terry Francona. “(His recovery) would be faster if he weren’t a catcher.”

Stephenson will be evaluated by a hand specialist this Thursday, during a day off in Phoenix. José Trevino will assume the role of starting catcher, while Will Banfield was promoted from Triple-A Louisville.
