SEATTLE – Seattle Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh tied the record of 54 home runs for a switch-hitter set by Mickey Mantle in a season, thanks to a home run in the first inning against the Los Angeles Angels this Sunday.Batting from the left side of the plate, Raleigh connected on the first pitch he saw, sending the ball to left-center field in front of pitcher Kyle Hendricks, giving the Mariners a 2-0 lead.Mantle hit his 54 home runs for the New York Yankees in the 1961 season.Raleigh’s home run was his forty-third home run of the season as a catcher, setting a new record, surpassing Javy López of Atlanta’s mark of 2003 by one.In his fifth season in the Major Leagues, Raleigh surpassed his personal best of 34 home runs from last year.
