Max Meyer Undergoes Surgery That Ends His Season
Miami Marlins right-handed pitcher Max Meyer will undergo surgery to repair his left hip labrum on Friday, according to sources close to the team before Tuesday’s game against the San Francisco Giants. Meyer was placed on the 15-day injured list on June 3 due to a left hip injury, one day after a complicated performance in which he allowed five runs (four earned) on 10 hits, five strikeouts, and one walk against Colorado. Dr. Thomas Byrd, in Nashville, Tennessee, will be in charge of performing the surgery, with an estimated recovery time of six to eight months. In 12 starts this season, Meyer had a 3-5 record, with an ERA of 4.73 and 68 strikeouts. This is the fourth consecutive season marked by injuries for Meyer, 26 years old. His 2022 season was cut short when he suffered a torn ulnar collateral ligament during his second start in the Major Leagues, requiring Tommy John surgery. He missed the entire 2023 season. Last September, bursitis in his right shoulder kept him out of action. The Marlins are also without left-handed pitcher Ryan Weathers, who was placed on the 60-day injured list on June 9 due to a left lat strain, but they have the rotation of Sandy Alcantara, Eury Pérez, Cal Quantrill, Edward Cabrera, and Janson Junk. McCullough did not specify on Tuesday whether Meyer would be ready for spring training. “I think it will depend heavily on how the rehabilitation process goes,” he said. “We hope so, but that will depend on how Max comes out of surgery and how the rehabilitation turns out during the winter.”“We are disappointed to receive the news that Max’s season is over,” said manager Clayton McCullough before Miami’s 4-2 victory over the Giants. “Now, we just have to focus on his recovery and getting him healthy for next year. Max and all of us are sad for him, that he had to get to this situation to come back.”
