Austin Hedges enters concussion list

Cleveland Guardians catcher Austin Hedges has been placed on the seven-day concussion list, retroactive to Wednesday.

Manager Stephen Vogt announced before Friday’s game against the Houston Astros that Hedges was hit by the bat in a backswing by Jazz Chisholm Jr., of the New York Yankees, during the ninth inning of Wednesday’s game.

This is the fifth concussion in Hedges’ career.

There is always a level of concern with any concussion, especially when there are as many as Hedgie has experienced. That’s why we’re being very cautious with this. This is more important than baseball and winning a game. We have to do the right thing for Austin and the right thing for him as a person, and that is to be super cautious. You don’t want to play around with anything related to concussions and especially with his history.

The Guardians selected Dom Nuñez’s contract from Triple-A Columbus. Nuñez was part of Friday’s lineup and made his first appearance at the Major League level since August 18, 2022, with Colorado. Cleveland also transferred right-handed pitcher Andrew Walters to the 60-day injured list. Walters suffered a significant tear in his right latissimus dorsi during the May 30 game against the Los Angeles Angels.
