Hunter Bigge remains hospitalized after being hit by a ball

Tampa Bay Rays reliever Hunter Bigge remains hospitalized after being hit in the face by a foul ball during Thursday’s game. However, team officials received encouraging news on Friday, as initial medical evaluations offered positive signs. Rays manager Kevin Cash and president of baseball operations Erik Neander visited Bigge on Friday and shared an update before Tampa Bay’s home game against the Detroit Tigers.

We were able to see Hunter and speak with him, he was in good spirits. There isn’t much more information than that. But for me personally, witnessing and seeing what happened (on Thursday), seeing how he was today and being able to interact, things were going in a very good direction.

Kevin Cash, Rays manager
Bigge, who is currently on the injured list with a lat strain, was sitting on the benches in front of the dugout when he was hit on the right side of the face by a foul ball batted by Adley Rutschman of the Baltimore Orioles during the seventh inning. He had to be taken off the dugout on a stretcher, but he gave a thumbs-up to the crowd as he was being put into the medical cart.

It’s a horrifying thing to happen. But we’ve definitely gotten good news from the staff and the guys who have been able to go see him. What we’re hearing is fantastic news considering how scary the incident was last night.

Brandon Lowe, Rays second baseman
After beginning his major league career with the Chicago Cubs last season, Bigge was traded to the Rays in July. In 32 total games in the majors (including one start), Bigge is 0-0 with a 2.51 ERA and one save.
