Miguel Amaya to the Injured List After Ankle Injury

Chicago Cubs catcher Miguel Amaya returns to the injured list after suffering a left ankle sprain during the game against the Toronto Blue Jays. Amaya, who had recently returned from a prolonged absence, was injured while stepping on first base on Wednesday night. After a single within the box in the eighth inning, Amaya stepped on the base strangely and twisted her ankle. He was removed from the field on a stretcher.

“You knew something was really wrong very quickly,” said Cubs manager Craig Counsell.

X-rays didn’t reveal any fractures, but Amaya’s ankle already showed considerable swelling.

“It’s bad luck, unfortunately, and we’re going to miss him,” Counsell added.

Amaya, 26, had been reinstated from the injured list on Tuesday after being out since May 25 due to a left oblique strain. Before the injury, he was batting .280 with four home runs and 25 RBIs in 27 games. Cubs rookie right-handed pitcher Cade Horton expressed his regret over Amaya’s situation, highlighting his quality as a player and teammate. To take Amaya’s place on the roster, the Cubs are calling up Owen Caissie, their No. 2 prospect. Caissie, 23, is batting .292 with 22 home runs and an OPS of .966 in Triple-A Iowa. Caissie was acquired in December 2020 in a deal involving Yu Darvish. He is likely to make his debut as a designated hitter in the last game of the Cubs series in Toronto.
