Wilyer Abreu Shines with Grand Slam and Inside-the-Park Home Run in Red Sox Victory
In a memorable night for the Boston Red Sox, Wilyer Abreu stole the show by hitting a grand slam and an inside-the-park home run, leading his team to a resounding 13-6 victory over the Cincinnati Reds. The game took place on Monday night, leaving an indelible mark on the fans’ memories. Abreu concluded the day with an outstanding performance of 2-5, driving in five runs for his team. According to data, Abreu became the first player in MLB history to hit an inside-the-park home run and a grand slam in the same game since Roger Maris achieved it in 1958. The inside-the-park home run was the first for a Boston player at Fenway Park since Jacoby Ellsbury did it on September 19, 2011.The Boston team punished Reds’ right-handed pitcher Chase Burns, taking him out of the game in the first inning after scoring seven runs. In that same inning, Trevor Story hit a three-run home run. Jarren Duran also contributed with a solo home run in the sixth inning for Boston, which achieved its second victory in nine games. Austin Hays stood out for the Reds with a two-run triple and a solo home run. Burns, 22, who was selected in the amateur draft in July, was punished with seven runs, five of them earned, and could only get one out. In his debut, he became the first starting pitcher in the expansion era to strike out the first five batters he faced. Boston’s opening pitcher, Garrett Crochet (8-4), retired the first 10 batters he faced before the Reds scored three runs in the fourth inning. He allowed five runs, four earned, in six innings with nine strikeouts. It was his first decision win at Fenway Park this season. He got a fastball he could handle, in the zone, for the grand slam. And that’s something we’ve been talking about. So far, it’s been an outstanding season for him. It’s been great.
Alex Cora, Red Sox manager
I wish it had been a better start. But wins are wins, and right now, we’ll take them however we can.
