Sarah Schmelzel and Minami Katsu Lead Walmart NW Arkansas Championship

In a day full of emotions at the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship, Sarah Schmelzel and Minami Katsu positioned themselves at the top of the leaderboard. Schmelzel starred in a spectacular comeback, while Katsu maintained a consistent and error-free round. Schmelzel, after a discreet performance in the first holes, managed a tie for the lead thanks to an impressive streak of five holes. The golfer finished with four consecutive birdies and an eagle, which allowed her to close the day with an impressive 63, tying Katsu’s score.

You should have opportunities on all those holes because you have pretty short clubs.

Alison Lee also had a strong finish, with a birdie and an eagle, finishing just one stroke behind the leaders. This performance comes in her third tournament after her return after becoming a mother at the end of April. The Pinnacle Country Club course witnessed low scores, which initially worried Schmelzel. However, he knew how to take advantage of the holes with birdie opportunities, achieving a notable improvement in his game. Katsu, for his part, distributed his eight birdies throughout the round, completing an impeccable round without bogeys. The surprise of the day was Alison Lee, who returned to competition this month after a period of absence. Lee reflected on the importance of having an additional day of preparation, which allowed her to refine her game. Lilia Vu, Nasa Hataoka, Carlota Ciganda, Leona Maguire, and Somi Lee also stood out with a 64. Nelly Korda, despite the good conditions, failed to take advantage of the situation and finished with a 69.
