Scottie Scheffler Dominates the Procore Championship

In what was anticipated as a training camp for the Ryder Cup, Scottie Scheffler demonstrated his supremacy at the Procore Championship, solidifying his position as the world’s number one. Scheffler, seeking to stay in shape for the September 26-28 matchups at Bethpage Black, finished on Sunday with an impressive round of 67 strokes under par, securing the victory by one stroke over Ben Griffin. This victory represents Scheffler’s sixth title on the PGA Tour this year, joining legends like Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, and Arnold Palmer, who have achieved at least six wins in consecutive seasons since 1960.

It was a week where I played on a new course, a course that was quite challenging to play for the first time. I did a really good job of staying in the tournament the first two days, and then the last two, I played some really good golf to be in this position.

Scheffler overcame an eight-stroke deficit over Griffin during the weekend, with rounds of 64 and 67, finishing with a total of 269 strokes, 19 under par. With this victory, Scheffler’s season surpasses $27.6 million in earnings. The Silverado event had an unprecedented field of play and attendance since it moved to Napa in 2014. The competition between Scheffler and Griffin kept viewers on the edge of their seats until the last moment. Griffin, a two-time winner this year and who will make his Ryder Cup debut at Bethpage Black, had a chance to tie with a 60-foot eagle putt on the 18th hole, but his attempt fell short. He finished the day with a 70.

I felt like I wasn’t as sharp from short range as I needed to be. But I’ll get to work next week and hopefully make every one of them in the Ryder Cup.

Scheffler, along with other players, considered the Procore Championship an ideal setting for the Ryder Cup team to prepare, avoiding the mistake of two years ago, when the majority had a month off before the matches in Rome. Four Ryder Cup players finished in the top ten, including J.J. Spaun and Cameron Young.

We suggested the idea of doing a reconnaissance trip to Bethpage or coming here and playing this event. We feel it would be a little more valuable to get all the guys here this week to play tournament golf in order to stay in shape.

Scheffler’s victory marks his 19th on the PGA Tour. Now, he prepares for the Ryder Cup against Europe, which has dominated in the last three decades. Lanto Griffin, who was in 142nd place in the FedEx Cup, achieved a 65, securing third place and moving up to 100th in the standings, with two months and at least five tournaments to go.

It’s huge. One of my goals this week was to give myself a chance. I wish Scottie wasn’t here, but I’m sure the fans enjoyed it.

Scheffler, who started two strokes behind, recovered after a challenging start from Griffin, who struggled to keep pace. Scheffler, with birdies on several holes, took the lead when Griffin faltered. Jackson Koivun, the world’s number one amateur, finished in fourth place, tied with Emiliano Grillo.
