Scheffler Demonstrates His Dominance at the Procore Championship

In what was anticipated as a training ground for the Ryder Cup, Scottie Scheffler turned the week into a display of his talent, securing the victory at the Procore Championship. The world number one demonstrated his prowess on Sunday, culminating in a round of 67 strokes, five under par, and surpassing Ben Griffin by one stroke. This triumph represents Scheffler’s sixth title on the PGA Tour this year, joining legends like Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, and Arnold Palmer, who achieved at least six victories in consecutive seasons since 1960.

It was a week playing on a new course, quite challenging for the first time. I did a good job of staying in the tournament the first two days, and then, in the last two, I played some really good golf to be in this position.

Scheffler overcame an eight-stroke deficit over Griffin during the weekend, with rounds of 64 and 67, finishing with a total of 19 under par, 269 strokes. This victory increased his season earnings to over $27.6 million. The tournament at Silverado featured the most competitive field and the highest attendance since it moved to Napa in 2014, offering an exciting spectacle under the sun. Griffin, who will debut at the Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black, was close to forcing a playoff, but his birdie putt on the 18th hole didn’t go in.

I wasn’t as precise from short range as I needed to be. I will work on this next week and hope to make each of them in the Ryder Cup.

Ben Griffin
Scheffler had pointed to this tournament as a good setting for the Ryder Cup team to prepare, avoiding the mistake of two years ago, when most had a month of inactivity before the matches in Rome.

Four Ryder Cup players were ranked among the top ten, including J.J. Spaun and Cameron Young.

The idea came up to do a reconnaissance trip to Bethpage or come here and play this event. We felt it would be a little more valuable to get all the guys together here this week to play tournament golf and stay sharp. There’s a difference between practicing and playing at home, and being under pressure in a tournament.

Scheffler’s victory was the 19th of his career on the PGA Tour. Now, he is preparing for the Ryder Cup against Europe, which has dominated in the last three decades. Lanto Griffin, after a round of 65, finished in third place, his best result in almost four years, rising to number 100 in the FedEx Cup standings.

It’s huge. One of my goals this week was to give myself a chance. I wish Scottie wasn’t here, but I’m sure the fans enjoyed it.

Scheffler, who started two strokes behind, regained ground with birdies, taking the lead when Griffin struggled. Young Jackson Koivun, the world’s number one amateur, tied for fourth place.
