Marco Penge Wins Danish Golf Championship

English golfer Marco Penge was crowned champion of the Danish Golf Championship on Sunday, after sinking a birdie on the 18th hole. His outstanding performance secured him the victory by one stroke over Rasmus Højgaard, who was seeking to secure his place on the European Ryder Cup team. Højgaard, playing in his home country, seemed headed for victory, leading by four strokes midway through his round. However, a series of errors on holes 10 through 13 cost him four strokes, allowing Penge to take the lead. Penge, with a two-stroke lead over Højgaard on the 18th hole, watched his competitor sink an eagle putt from 10 feet, which generated euphoria from the public present at the Furesø Golf Klub in Copenhagen.

Penge, ranked 97th, needed a 3-foot birdie putt to secure the victory. With great composure, he managed to sink it, completing a round of 67 strokes, four under par, and finishing the tournament with a total of 16 under par. This victory represents his second title on the DP World Tour this year, after winning the Hainan Classic in April. Højgaard, with a round of 69 strokes, placed second and remains outside the six automatic qualifying spots for the Ryder Cup, just behind Sepp Straka. The competition for a place on the European team for next month at Bethpage Black is still open. Next week, the last qualifying event for both players will be held. Højgaard will compete in the British Masters of the DP World Tour, while Straka will participate in the Tour Championship of the PGA Tour, which offers more points for the classification.

He’s a great player; the shot he made on the last hole and the eagle he holed, basically forced me to win. It was incredible.
