The golf elite prepares for the FedEx Cup playoffs, which start next week with the FedEx St. Jude Championship. A notable absence will be that of the world number 2, Rory McIlroy. The defending Masters champion is not on the list of participants for the St. Jude, published Friday by the PGA Tour. To qualify for the event, which will be held in Memphis, Tennessee, players must rank among the top 70 in the FedEx Cup standings after this week’s Wyndham Championship. With McIlroy’s absence, the field is reduced to 69 golfers. Last year, McIlroy finished in the penultimate position at the St. Jude, a tournament he has yet to conquer. The golfer had already anticipated his decision not to participate in this year’s edition.
McIlroy is second in the FedEx Cup standings, just behind Scottie Scheffler, which secures him a place among the top 50 advancing to the BMW Championship the following week. The playoffs will culminate with the Tour Championship, where the top 30 in the FedEx standings will compete. McIlroy’s last participation was at the Open Championship two weeks ago, where he tied for seventh place.I practically finished in last place this year and only dropped one position in the playoff standings.
