Rory McIlroy showcased his skill at the Genesis Invitational, despite the adverse weather conditions. The Irish golfer achieved an impressive round of 5 under par (66), sharing the clubhouse lead with Jacob Bridgeman. Thursday’s play at Riviera was marked by an unusual combination of rain and wind, factors that tested the players’ skill. The rain, which flooded the greens, forced a three-hour interruption, after which the wind intensified, further complicating the game.

McIlroy Adapts to the Conditions

McIlroy, who started with three birdies in the first four holes, demonstrated his adaptation to the circumstances. The golfer, known for preferring warmer conditions, revealed a change in his mentality and a greater preparation to face this type of challenges.

Aaron Rai, with two holes to play, was at 6 under par when darkness forced the suspension of the day. Play would resume on Friday morning, with a forecast of dry weather for the weekend. Ryan Fox signed a card of 67 strokes, while Collin Morikawa, winner at Pebble Beach, was at 68. The conditions of the greens were a key factor in the game. Adam Scott even starred in an unusual moment with a tee shot that landed centimeters from the hole. McIlroy was close to getting another birdie, but his shot with a 9-iron went astray. Another highlight was a shot from the rough 60 yards from the 10th hole, which stopped inches from the target.
The great performance of Jacob Bridgeman, who debuted at Riviera, was also notable. After a complicated start, Bridgeman regained his best form with five birdies in ten holes, demonstrating his ability to adapt to the windy conditions.

I think one of my strengths is hitting down, hitting shots where people don’t really know how far they’re playing, what the real number is and just feeling it.
