Keegan Bradley Considers Player-Captain Role in Ryder Cup

After his victory at the Travelers Championship, Keegan Bradley is at a crossroads: should he be a player-captain for the United States team at the Ryder Cup to be held at Bethpage Black in September? The decision, according to Bradley, only depends on him. “This changes the story a bit,” he commented on Sunday after his victory. “I would never have thought about playing if I hadn’t won. This definitely opens the door to playing. I don’t know if I will or not, but I certainly have to thoroughly analyze what is best for the team.” Bradley has moved up to number 9 in the Ryder Cup standings and has reached number 7 in the World Golf Ranking, his best position to date. His two PGA Tour victories in the last year surpass those of any other American, except for Scottie Scheffler, the world number 1.

“It’s incredible that I’ve spent 15 years of my career here [on the PGA Tour]. Every year my goal is to be part of the Ryder Cup team,” Bradley told “Golf Central.” “And then, this would be the year I thought, ‘You know, I’m excited to be the captain.’ And then, of course, something like this happens.”

Bradley made it clear that, if he decides to play, he would do so as a player-captain, ruling out the possibility of one of his assistants, such as Jim Furyk, Kevin Kisner, Webb Simpson or Brandt Snedeker, taking on the captain’s role.

The top six players in the points standings after the BMW Championship, to be held on August 17, will automatically qualify for the team. Bradley will also select six additional players as captain. At this moment, Scheffler, Xander Schauffele, and J.J. Spaun appear to be the top three, with Russell Henley, Bryson DeChambeau, and Justin Thomas rounding out the top six. Collin Morikawa, Ben Griffin, Bradley, Harris English, Maverick McNealy, and Brian Harman are the next six in the points standings as of Sunday. The Ryder Cup will be held from September 26 to 28 at Bethpage Black, in Farmingdale, New York.
