The golfer Bryson DeChambeau has expressed his support for the Turnberry course in Scotland, owned by former President Donald Trump, to host the Open Championship.

DeChambeau and his opinion on Turnberry

DeChambeau, after an outstanding round of 65 strokes at the Open, highlighted the qualities of the course. “I see it as a golf course,” DeChambeau stated. “It’s one of the best golf courses in the world, and I would love for it to be part of the rotation.”

Although I haven’t played, I’ve heard so many great things about it, and anytime you can play on a historic and special golf course like that, I think it’s worth it, for sure.

Turnberry, which is part of the R&A Open rotation, has not hosted the tournament for 16 years, before Trump acquired the resort. Mark Darbon, CEO of the R&A, mentioned that transportation and other issues must be addressed before Turnberry can host the championship again. They met with representatives from Trump Golf to discuss the “major logistical challenges” facing Turnberry, and the conversations were constructive. The next unannounced Open site is in 2028. DeChambeau believes Trump would make Turnberry a special place for the Open. “He would still probably respect the R&A and what they’re trying to achieve,” DeChambeau said. “I can’t speak for him, but what I can say is that, knowing him, he will do the best job possible.” DeChambeau’s relationship with Trump includes his participation in a campaign event in Florida and a golf game at the White House. The video of DeChambeau and Trump playing at the Bedminster Golf Club in New Jersey was a great success, accumulating millions of views. Turnberry has hosted the Open Championship four times, including the famous “Duel in the Sun” of 1977.
