Max Verstappen has assured that Christian Horner’s departure from Red Bull will not influence his future within the team. The news of Horner’s departure, announced two weeks ago, has dominated the conversation in the Formula 1 world, especially in the run-up to the Belgian Grand Prix. Verstappen’s future at Red Bull has been the subject of speculation, despite having a contract until 2028. The driver has been openly courted by Mercedes, which has added uncertainty to his situation.

No, it really doesn’t.

When asked if Horner’s departure would change his future decisions, Verstappen responded firmly. He explained that although differences of opinion are natural, his main focus remains the car’s performance and constant improvement. Verstappen revealed that he found out about the news from Red Bull shareholders the day before it was made public. He kept his opinion private, respecting the team management’s decision. The driver confirmed that he has spoken with Horner since then and that the relationship between them has not changed. He highlighted Red Bull’s successes over the last 20 years and his gratitude for the time shared. Red Bull’s problems on the track in recent months have intensified questions about Verstappen’s future beyond this season. It has been confirmed that there is a clause in the driver’s contract that could be activated if he is in fourth position or lower in the championship at the end of the Hungarian Grand Prix on August 3. Currently, Verstappen holds third place, with an 18-point lead over George Russell of Mercedes. If the clause is not activated, Mercedes would have to negotiate a buyout of his contract to have him in 2026, which would involve a significant cost given that he has three and a half years left on his contract, with an estimated value of 50 million dollars annually. When asked about the possibility of not being in Red Bull in 2026, Verstappen responded with humor, but reaffirmed his happiness in the team and his intention to fulfill the contract. The closeness between Verstappen and Mercedes boss Toto Wolff during a vacation in Sardinia sparked speculation on social media. Verstappen downplayed these rumors, explaining that he coincided with Wolff on the island as part of his personal vacation.
