Stroll Penalized: 5 Grid Place Penalty at US GP for Collision with Ocon

Lance Stroll has been penalized with five grid positions for Sunday’s United States Grand Prix, due to an incident with Esteban Ocon during Saturday’s sprint race. The collision between Stroll and Ocon occurred at Turn 1, when the Aston Martin driver collided with the Haas driver in the final stages of the race, which culminated in the safety car. The stewards determined that Stroll was responsible for the incident, imposing the grid penalty and two additional penalty points, totaling seven in a 12-month period.

Pilots who accumulate 12 penalty points on their super license within a 12-month period receive a race ban.

“Car number 18 attempted an overtake on the inside of car number 31 at Turn 1, but misjudged the braking point and collided with car number 31”, the stewards noted in their report. “The stewards determine that the driver of car number 18 is entirely at fault and apply a penalty accordingly.”

The incident caused the second safety car of the 100 km race, after McLaren drivers Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris collided at Turn 1 on the opening lap. The qualifying for Sunday’s race will start at 4 p.m. local time.
