Leclerc: The 2026 regulations are not the most “enjoyable”

Charles Leclerc expressed his reservations about the initial experience at the wheel of the virtual version of the 2026 Ferrari in the simulator. The Monegasque driver shared his impressions after testing the single-seater that will mark a significant change in Formula 1. The new F1 technical regulations for 2026 seek a balance between electric and combustion power, with a 50/50 ratio. This implies a considerable increase in battery power, close to 300% compared to current cars. To achieve this goal, aerodynamic regulations have been reviewed in order to reduce air resistance and make the cars more efficient. However, this reduction could lead to a decrease in downforce and, consequently, slower lap times. Leclerc, after testing the simulator in Maranello, commented: “Let’s say it’s not the most enjoyable race car I’ve driven so far, but we are still in a phase where the project is relatively new.”

My hope resides in the fact that it will evolve quite a bit in the coming months, but it’s no secret that I think the regulations for next year will be much more… probably less pleasant to drive for the drivers.

The Ferrari driver added: “So yes, I’m not a big fan for now, but it is what it is and at the end of the day I think there is a challenge and I would like the challenge of maximizing a car very different from what it is at the moment. But do I enjoy it? Probably not.”

Concerns about energy management in 2026 could affect the quality of the races, as the drivers would have to adapt their style to avoid depleting the battery. When asked about which aspect generated the least enthusiasm, whether the reduction of aerodynamic load or energy management, Leclerc replied that it was a combination of both, but mainly the second. “It’s just strange. I still can’t imagine what the races will be like and how exciting the overtaking will be next year with this new regulation.” Leclerc concluded by saying that the FIA and the teams are aware of this and that some adjustments will probably be made. However, he doesn’t know how much it will change. Leclerc’s teammate, Lewis Hamilton, has not yet tested the 2026 car in the simulator, but is already working with Ferrari to improve some aspects of the 2025 car for next year. Hamilton said they are working hard with Fred Vasseur and the team to implement changes and improvements to achieve long-term success. They are focusing on the front and rear suspension for next year, addressing understeer issues and learning from previous years and this year so that next year is the best.
