Formula 1: Return to V8 Engines for 2029?
The world of Formula 1 could experience a significant change in the coming years. According to statements by FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem, there is a possibility that V8 engines, powered by fully sustainable fuel, will return to competition in 2029. The upcoming season will mark the beginning of a new era of engines, but the highest authority in the sport suggested that a return to naturally aspirated V8 or V10 engines was being considered. V8 engines were last used in 2013, before the implementation of the current 1.6-liter V6 units.During the British Grand Prix, Ben Sulayem explained that research and development (R&D) reaches $200 million, and the engine costs approximately between $1.8 and $2.1 million. A V8 could be a viable solution. The FIA president highlighted the commercial advantages of V8s, as many manufacturers produce them in their vehicles. Furthermore, he noted that these engines would offer significant benefits in terms of weight and the sound would be well received by both nostalgic fans and new generations. Ben Sulayem was optimistic about the return of the V8s. He stated that the project has the support of the teams and that Formula 1 is recognizing that it is the right path. Although it takes at least three years to finalize the change, he hopes that it can materialize by 2029, although fuel and transmissions are factors to consider due to their high cost. The current engine is very complicated, they have no idea, and it’s expensive.
