When Red Bull decides to promote a young driver, the motorsport world stops. The Austrian team, known for its development program, has set its sights on Arvid Lindblad, a talented 18-year-old British-Swedish driver. Lindblad officially joins Racing Bulls, Red Bull’s sister team, becoming one of the youngest drivers to obtain a race seat in Formula 1. His debut in Australia next year will position him as the third youngest driver in the category’s history.

Meteoric Rise

Lindblad’s rise has been meteoric. His single-seater debut was just a few years ago, and many in the paddock already anticipated his arrival in the top category. But, who is Lindblad and why is Red Bull pushing him so quickly to F1?

Early Years and Career

Arvid Gustav Lindblad was born on August 8, 2007 in Virginia Water, Surrey. His father is Swedish and his mother is British-Indian. At the age of five, he was already competing in karting at Daytona Sandown Park in Esher, and his progress in the UK was remarkable. In 2019, he became British cadet champion and, under the tutelage of Formula E driver Oliver Rowland, won the WSK Super Master Series in 2020 and the WSK Euro Series in 2021. In 2021, at just 13 years old, he signed with the Red Bull Junior Team, a clear sign of the team’s confidence in his long-term potential.

From Karting Star to Single-Seater Prodigy

Lindblad’s transition from karting to single-seaters was intense but impressive. In his debut season in single-seater vehicles, he competed in multiple F4 series in Italy, the United Arab Emirates, and Euro 4, fighting for the title in all three. He stood out with a high-profile victory in the Macao F4 race. The next big leap came in 2024, when he joined PREMA Racing in FIA Formula 3. It was an aggressive promotion, but he justified it with a historic campaign. He became the youngest winner in F3 history with his victory in the sprint race in Bahrain and delivered a historic performance at Silverstone, dominating the entire weekend, something no F3 driver had achieved before. His season demonstrated not only raw speed but also veteran consistency, and he finished the year as one of the most outstanding graduates of the championship, in fourth place.

Rapid Promotion to F2 and Great Show of Confidence

Lindblad moved to Formula 2 in 2025, facing the demanding machinery that serves as the final testing ground for F1.

Although he demonstrated the adaptability that has characterized every step of his rise, it has not been as simple as many of his other years in racing. Lindblad began the season as a title contender, with consistent points and impressive victories in the Jeddah sprint and the main race in Barcelona, but since then he has only reached the podium once. That was in Monza, the day before he collided with Alex Dunne, forcing him to retire from the race.

But the next move was always on Red Bull’s mind, so much so that in June he was granted a special FIA superlicense at the age of 17, similar to Mercedes teenager Kimi Antonelli. In October, after his first F1 test earlier in the year, he was a striking sixth in practice in Mexico when he replaced Verstappen. Lindblad is sixth in the F2 championship with one round remaining in Abu Dhabi, where he arrives knowing that he is the next full-time F1 star.

Why Red Bull Chose It and What Follows

The seat at Racing Bulls is not a ceremonial placement; it’s a live audition for the future. Red Bull uses the team as its talent crucible, and promoting Lindblad now indicates they see him as a long-term candidate for their main team, perhaps even as a future teammate or successor to Verstappen. The step is huge. The scrutiny will be intense. Mistakes will come. But Red Bull doesn’t promote 18-year-olds unless they are sure the ceiling is very high. First, he must prove he can hold his own against a strong competitor like Liam Lawson. However, Lawson already had the opportunity to occupy the main seat at Red Bull, so Lindblad could be next in line if Red Bull fancies a change.

Arvid’s rapid progression marks him as one of the most outstanding young talents in the sport.
