Katie Taylor Steps Away from Boxing Temporarily; Named Champion in Recess by WBC

The outstanding boxer Katie Taylor will take some time off from boxing to attend to personal matters, as confirmed by the World Boxing Council (WBC), who has named her champion in recess. Taylor, with a record of 25-1 and 6 KOs, defeated Amanda Serrano in July in their third match, securing the undisputed super lightweight championship.

Originally, Taylor was expected to face Chantelle Cameron. However, the WBC has decided to name Taylor as the champion in recess, ordering Cameron to fight Sandy Ryan for the title.

As a champion in recess, Taylor has the option to take time off from the sport, but will be able to return to compete for the title in the future.

“She [Taylor] informed us that she plans to take some time away from the ring to attend to personal matters,” stated Mauricio Suliman, WBC president.

“The fight I was obliged to have was against Chantelle Cameron; by naming her the champion in recess, we will order Sandy Ryan to fight Cameron to ratify the WBC super lightweight world title.” Cameron, with a record of 21-1 and 8 KOs, had requested a third match against Taylor, after having defeated her in Dublin in May 2023, inflicting Taylor’s only professional defeat. Taylor won the rematch later that year, setting the stage for a trilogy. However, Cameron will now be ordered to face Ryan (8-3-1), who returned with a victory against Jade Grierson earlier this month, after two consecutive defeats against Mikaela Mayer.
