Italy Crowned Davis Cup Champion Without Sinner
Italy continues to reign in the Davis Cup, demonstrating its power in world tennis even without the presence of its star, Jannik Sinner.
Matteo Berrettini and Flavio Cobolli led the Italian team, securing the victory over Spain in the final with a resounding 2-0.
This triumph marks Italy’s fourth Davis Cup title, and the third consecutive. The last nation to achieve three straight victories was the United States, between 1968 and 1972.
Sinner, world number two and a key player in Italy’s recent successes, chose not to participate in this edition to focus on preparing for the upcoming season. Lorenzo Musetti, also absent, was also not part of the team.
Italy demonstrated its strength by winning all its matches 2-0 at the SuperTennis Arena in Bologna, overcoming Austria in the quarterfinals and Belgium in the semifinals.
Spain, for its part, also regretted the absence of its star, Carlos Alcaraz, number one in the world.
In Sunday’s final, Berrettini defeated Pablo Carreño Busta with scores of 6-3, 6-4. Cobolli, for his part, came back to defeat Jaume Munar 1-6, 7-6 (5), 7-5, securing the decisive point, as he had already done on the three previous occasions this week. The celebration after the victory was effusive, with Cobolli being lifted by his teammates.
Italy conquered the Davis Cup for the first time in 1976, and added victories in Malaga in 2023 and 2024. This is the first time they have won at home.
Spain, six-time champion, reached the final for the first time since 2019.
