Mike Matheson extends his contract with the Montreal Canadiens
The Montreal Canadiens have secured defenseman Mike Matheson for five more years, through a contract extension valued at $30 million. The announcement was made on Friday, before the team’s game in Las Vegas.
The new agreement will come into effect at the start of next season and will run until the 2030-31 campaign.
Matheson, 31, has an 11-season career in the NHL. He is currently in his fourth season with Montreal, where he has recorded four goals and ten assists in 22 games played. In addition, he leads the team and is in the top 10 of the NHL with an average of 24 minutes and 50 seconds of ice time per game.
The player was acquired by Montreal along with a fourth-round pick in 2023, in a trade that sent Jeff Petry and Ryan Poehling to Pittsburgh in July 2022.
With a height of 6 feet 2 inches and a weight of 196 pounds, Matheson achieved his personal best in the 2023-24 season, accumulating 62 points (11 goals and 51 assists). Since then, he has taken on a more defensive role in Montreal, regularly facing the opposing team’s most prominent offensive lines.
Matheson was selected in the first round of the 2012 draft by Florida, where he played his first five seasons in the NHL, before spending two seasons in Pittsburgh.
In his career, Matheson has a total of 78 goals and 279 points in 649 games.
