The Cincinnati Reds have made significant moves in their roster, including placing star pitcher Hunter Greene on the 15-day injured list due to a right groin strain.

Simultaneously, the team has signed veteran left-hander Wade Miley to a one-year contract.

Miley, 38, underwent Tommy John surgery on his left elbow in May 2024. Previously, he had signed a minor league contract with the Reds on February 4, which included a release clause if he didn’t make it to the Major Leagues before June 1.

The 14-year veteran executed that clause on Sunday, but remained in Cincinnati while seeking deals with other teams and staying in contact with the Reds.

I was able to spend time with my family, just being a dad, going to Little League games. I appreciate the Reds organization and the way they handled it. We always kept in touch. I feel healthy and I’m very excited to be back. I’m ready to work.

Miley joins Nick Lodolo and Andrew Abbott as the third left-handed pitcher in the Reds’ rotation. In his previous two seasons with the team (2020-21), Miley had a 12-10 record with a 3.55 ERA in 34 appearances, including 32 starts. In addition, he threw the seventeenth no-hitter in franchise history on May 7, 2021. Manager Terry Francona noted that Miley’s presence is a welcome addition to the Reds’ young rotation. Miley will be available from the bullpen for the end of Wednesday’s series against the Brewers. If not used, he will pitch the first game of the series against Cleveland and then join the rotation.

It’s really welcome. We’ve been waiting for it. It’s a bright light. It brings a lot. His ability to compete, it won’t let you down.

This move represents another setback for Greene, who had made three starts after being on the injured list for 15 days last month due to a groin strain suffered on May 7.

In Tuesday night’s victory against the Brewers, Greene threw 85 pitches before leaving the game after five innings due to groin discomfort. An MRI was scheduled for Wednesday morning, but Francona indicated that it wasn’t necessary to wait for the results.

We talked to him, we talked to the trainers, it was an easy decision even without seeing the MRI. We have to get him healthy.

Greene, who was called to the All-Star for the first time last season, has a 4-3 record with a 2.72 ERA in 11 starts this year.
