New York City Mayor Weighs in on UFC 322 Fight

New York City Mayor Eric Adams has announced his intention to take legal action regarding the fight that took place at the UFC 322 event at Madison Square Garden. The incident, captured on video, involved Dillon Danis, Conor McGregor’s former training partner, and several members of the team of UFC welterweight champion Islam Makhachev. The fight occurred moments before the main card of the event on November 15th. Makhachev, who headlined the event, was crowned welterweight champion by defeating Jack Della Maddalena.

These assaults at Madison Square Garden are completely unacceptable. The New York Police Department is already conducting a thorough investigation, and all those responsible will be held accountable.

Although the UFC tends to handle disputes between athletes internally, Mayor Adams has made it clear that the city will take a firm stance on what happened. In the post-event press conference, UFC CEO Dana White announced the permanent ban of Danis from future organization events. Danis has a history of public altercations and had posted offensive, some false, comments and photos about Makhachev in the days leading up to the event. Several videos showed the participation of Makhachev’s teammates, Magomed ‘Chanco’ Zaynukov and Abubakar Nurmagomedov, in the incident, including blows to Danis’s head. Danis was escorted out of the arena by security, while Makhachev’s teammates were removed and watched the fight from another location. The tension between Danis and Makhachev’s team dates back to 2017, when McGregor challenged Makhachev’s mentor, Khabib Nurmagomedov, for the UFC lightweight championship. Makhachev commented on the incident: “When you talk about someone for the last five years, when you meet them, you have to answer for what you said.”
