The Spanish women’s national football team, led by Aitana Bonmatí, has highlighted the team’s physical evolution after the defeat suffered against England in the quarter-finals of the 2022 European Championship. Both teams are preparing for a crucial match in the UEFA Nations League, where they will compete for a place in the final four.

Spain, the current world champion, leads Group 3 of League A with a two-point advantage over England, which adds excitement to the decisive match to be held at the RCDE stadium in Barcelona.

Since that match in the European Championship, where England prevailed, Spain has had the opportunity to take revenge. The victory in the World Cup final and the English triumph at Wembley demonstrate the intensity of the rivalry.

“We grew a lot as a team after that match. We won the World Cup, the Nations League, and improved a lot, especially in the physical aspect. Spain has always had talent and technique, but before we couldn’t compete physically with teams like England or the United States. Now we can.”

Spain needs to avoid defeat to secure its place in the Final Four, which will be played in October. For its part, England must win to advance. Both teams also have the European Championship this summer in Switzerland in their sights.

Bonmatí is clear about the main objective: to win the European Championship. “It’s our main objective this year, because it’s one of the trophies we don’t have with the senior national team. It would be nice for me and the team to win it, as it is one of the best competitions at the national team level. I hope this year is the year and we will give it our all to achieve it.” Driving Spain to victory in the European Championship could boost Bonmatí in the race for the Ballon d’Or for the third consecutive year.

“It would be a unique achievement. We are doing great things as a team. It would be good if the Ballon d’Or stayed at the club, because I think we have the best players in the world.”

At club level, Bonmatí’s season was marred by Barcelona’s defeat to Arsenal in the Champions League final, but the Catalan club conquered the Liga F and the Spanish Super Cup, and still has the Copa de la Reina final against Atlético de Madrid pending.
