Washington Nationals: Offensive Explosion in May

The Washington Nationals closed out a promising May with an impressive 11-7 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks, highlighted by a historic first inning.

In an unprecedented offensive display, the Nationals scored 10 runs in the first inning, marking a milestone in their performance. The first 11 batters of the team reached base, adding nine runs before the Diamondbacks managed an out, the second-highest amount in Major League history since 1961.

I’ve been part of some innings with a lot of runs, but that was a really good one. It was nice to attack a quality opener and have a first inning like that. You don’t see it often.

Nathaniel Lowe, Nationals first baseman

The Washington team finished May with a 15-12 record, their first winning month since August 2023. The team’s confidence is increasing, with an improvement in their overall performance.

We should get used to it. We play this game to win. The idea is to go out every day with the opportunity to compete and win. Losing is not the reason we play.

Nathaniel Lowe, Nationals first baseman
Luis Garcia Jr. contributed a double, a fielder’s choice, and three RBIs, as the Nationals sent 16 batters to the plate in the first inning. It took the Diamondbacks 30 minutes to get three outs.

We had good at-bats, everyone did. We spread the ball around the field. We ended up scoring a lot of runs, which we definitely needed tonight.

Dave Martinez, Nationals manager
The Arizona opener, Brandon Pfaadt, was replaced after the first eight batters reached base. He allowed eight earned runs and his ERA increased from 3.90 to 5.05.

The struggling Diamondbacks have lost nine of their last 10 games. Washington has won 11 of its last 15 and has scored at least nine runs in each of the last four games.
