Ernst Tanner, Sporting Director of the Philadelphia Union, on Administrative Leave Due to Investigation
The Philadelphia Union announced this Wednesday that its sporting director, Ernst Tanner, has been placed on administrative leave. This is because Major League Soccer (MLS) has decided to reopen an investigation into allegations of inappropriate workplace behavior. According to reports, Tanner is facing accusations of making racist comments directed at players, coaches, and referees of Black race. In addition, he is accused of using sexist and anti-gay language in the workplace.The MLS had previously concluded an investigation into the allegations, but closed the case after being unable to verify the claims. Following the publication of a report containing new allegations, the league has decided to reopen the investigation. Tanner joined the Union as sporting director in 2018 and signed a contract extension in 2021.The Philadelphia Union takes all allegations of misconduct very seriously and is committed to maintaining a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment for everyone associated with our club. Discrimination, harassment, or abusive conduct of any kind has no place here, and all personnel must complete annual sensitivity training.
