49ers Secure Matt Gay as Interim Kicker
The San Francisco 49ers have made a crucial decision following the injury of Eddy Piñeiro, their starting kicker. The team announced the signing of Matt Gay to the practice squad, providing a temporary solution while they assess Piñeiro’s condition.
Piñeiro suffered a Grade 1 hamstring injury in his right leg during the game against the Arizona Cardinals. Coach Kyle Shanahan indicated that Piñeiro’s recovery would be “week to week”.
Before settling on Gay, the 49ers evaluated several kickers, including Anders Carlson, John Parker Romo, Tanner Brown, and Cade York.
Matt Gay arrives at the team after being released by the Washington Commanders, where he had some difficulties, including missed field goal attempts. During his time with the Commanders, Gay made 13 of 19 field goal attempts and made all 22 extra points.
Gay has extensive experience in the NFL, having played in 100 games with teams like the Commanders, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Los Angeles Rams, and Indianapolis Colts. Throughout his career, he has converted 84% of his 212 field goal attempts.
To make room for Gay on the practice squad, the 49ers released wide receiver Russell Gage Jr.
