Nicolai Højgaard Poised for Victory at the World Golf Championship
Danish golfer Nicolai Højgaard is positioning himself to conquer the World Golf Championship for the second time, after taking a three-stroke lead on Friday. The competition is unfolding with intensity, and several of the European Ryder Cup stars are lurking, ready to snatch the victory. Among the closest competitors is Rory McIlroy, whose brilliant short game allowed him to finish the second round with 69 strokes, remaining in the fight for his fourth consecutive title in the Race to Dubai, as the best player in Europe. McIlroy shares second place with a group of five golfers, including Justin Rose and Shane Lowry. Robert MacIntyre and Tommy Fleetwood, also Ryder Cup players, are one stroke behind, while Tyrrell Hatton is one shot further back. They are all chasing Højgaard, who holds the 70th position in the ranking. Although he was not selected for the Ryder Cup team on this occasion, showcasing his skill on the Earth Course. The 24-year-old golfer achieved an impressive round of 65 strokes, the best of the day, adding to his initial 67, for a total of 12 under par for the week. Højgaard, who won the tournament in 2023, did not qualify last year and now dominates a star-studded field on his return. His only other time leading after 36 holes on the European circuit was at the World Championship, two years ago. That remains his last victory.McIlroy combined six birdies with three bogeys on a day when he wasn’t at his best off the tee, but his wedge game was exceptional. It’s one of my favorite tournaments to play. It’s great to come back with a good level. It suits my game. It suits my strengths, which are the mid irons. It’s a very good combination for me.

Alongside McIlroy, Lowry, and Rose, in a tie for second place, are Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen and Daniel Hillier.I felt that I demonstrated my scoring skills today and fought well, I remained patient and managed to get the ball up and down when needed. And overall, shooting 69, I’m quite happy considering some of the places I found myself.
Rory McIlroy
Only Marco Penge and Hatton, second and third in the Race to Dubai standings respectively, can surpass McIlroy this week. Penge seems to be out of the running in 44th place, 12 strokes behind the leader, so only Hatton can stop the Northern Irishman.
Hatton, who is five strokes behind Højgaard, needs to win and for McIlroy to finish worse than tied for eighth place with another player.Fleetwood started the second round in second place, one stroke behind Michael Kim, and had a frustrating day with the putter. He managed an eagle on the 2nd hole, along with 16 pars and a bogey. That missed shot ended a remarkable streak of 69 bogey-free holes, dating back to the 15th hole of the second round in Abu Dhabi last week, where he lost in a playoff to Aaron Rai. Kim shot 76 after opening with 64.You start every tournament week trying to win the tournament. It’s no different. I know I need results to go my way for that to happen. I’m not thinking about that much. I’m just trying to play better.
