Hayden Wesneski will undergo Tommy John surgery

Houston Astros right-handed pitcher Hayden Wesneski will undergo elbow reconstruction surgery, known as Tommy John. This intervention is expected to keep him out of action until the end of the 2026 season.

Wesneski was placed on the 15-day injured list on May 9 due to right elbow discomfort, three days after allowing four runs in four innings in a 4-3 loss against Milwaukee. The 27-year-old had a 1-3 record with a 4.50 ERA.

Wesneski arrived to the Astros along with Isaac Paredes and Cam Smith in the offseason trade that sent Kyle Tucker to the Chicago Cubs. Throughout his four seasons in the Major Leagues, Wesneski has made 28 starts in 74 appearances.

The Astros, who announced the diagnosis after Sunday’s 4-3 victory over the Texas Rangers, had omitted Wesneski from one of their rotations before the start against the Brewers.

In Milwaukee, I felt better. The next day, I felt great. I was very excited. I got on the plane, landed at home in Houston, and it just started swelling. The day off only made it worse.

Wesneski will remain in the Dallas area for the surgery, with the hope that it will be performed this week. Dr. Keith Meister, team doctor for the Rangers, will be in charge of performing the procedure.

Wesneski was on the injured list with the Cubs last season due to a right forearm strain. He had seven starts in 28 appearances in 2024, after having 11 starts and 23 relief appearances two years ago. Wesneski’s six appearances this season were as a starter.
