Jose Fernandez, new coach of the Dallas Wings

The Dallas Wings are on the verge of securing Jose Fernandez, a long-time coach in South Florida, as their new head coach, according to sources close to the situation.

Although the contract hasn’t been signed yet, it is expected to happen soon.

Fernandez will become the fifth coach in seven seasons for the Wings, who are looking to build a competitive team after the arrival of star Paige Bueckers. The Wings were looking for a candidate with significant experience as a head coach, a proven track record of sustained success, and international reach. USF confirmed through a statement on social media that Fernandez has notified the university of his decision to leave the program to coach in the WNBA. Fernandez led the Bulls to 10 NCAA tournament appearances since his arrival in Tampa in 2000, including eight in the last 11 years, accumulating a 485-317 record and transforming the program into one of the best in the nation.

“For the past 25 years, Jose has been an exceptional leader, mentor, and advocate for the University of South Florida,” said Rob Higgins, USF Athletics CEO. “His impact on USF Athletics and our university community is profound, and his legacy will be remembered and celebrated for years to come.”

Michele Woods-Baxter was named interim head coach of USF before the 2025-26 season, which begins on November 3. Dallas announced in September that it was parting ways with Chris Koclanes after a year at the helm, where the Wings had a 10-34 record and finished in last place. The Wings also have the best odds of getting the first pick in the next draft lottery, which will be held on a date yet to be announced. With this, there are now three WNBA coaching vacancies that have been filled, with the hiring of Alex Sarama by the Portland Fire and Sandy Brondello by the Toronto Tempo.
