Bearman Criticizes Tsunoda’s Driving Style at the United States Grand Prix

The young Formula 1 driver, Oliver Bearman, expressed his dissatisfaction with the way Yuki Tsunoda drove during the United States Grand Prix. Bearman described Tsunoda’s driving as dangerous and a bad example for young aspiring drivers. The controversy arose after Bearman was forced to take evasive maneuvers to avoid Tsunoda’s Red Bull, who was defending his position mid-race. Tsunoda locked up at the apex in Turn 15, causing Bearman to go off track and spin.

I felt that what he did was quite dangerous, contrary to the spirit of how we should race and the image we should project to the children growing up in karting and those things. This is not how we race. He was zig-zagging all over the place for a few laps. And when I finally put my nose in and tried to move forward, he reacted and didn’t leave the width of a track car, and that’s unfair, it’s not allowed, and that forced me to avoid him.

Bearman, who finished in ninth place, considered that the incident prevented him from obtaining a better position. Tsunoda, for his part, finished seventh and did not agree with Bearman’s criticisms.

Bearman also mentioned other incidents of Tsunoda during the race weekend, including an incident in the sprint race, where, according to Bearman, Tsunoda touched his teammate.

In the sprint race, he went for the inside at Turn 1 and took out his sister car [Hadjar]. In the main race, he did the same at Turn 1 again. I feel like his driving can be a bit desperate and that was shown in his defense today.

Tsunoda, when asked about Bearman’s comments, replied that “that’s racing”.

I was totally in control, I had no lock-up and was literally side by side. I’m not his teammate, I’m just fighting to be in the top 10 or more, so yeah, I thought it was okay.

Tsunoda added: “I don’t think I moved under braking. Just a bit unfortunate how we ended up in that race like that, especially because we were having a good fight until then.”
