Bruno Fernandes, Manchester United captain, attributed his team’s victory over Liverpool to the frustration shown by the home fans. The triumph, the first at Anfield since January 2016, came with a score of 2-1. Harry Maguire scored the decisive goal in the 84th minute, after Cody Gakpo equalized Bryan Mbeumo’s opening goal for the visitors. This victory allowed Amorim to record consecutive league wins for the first time since his arrival from Sporting CP last November and also condemned Liverpool to their fourth consecutive defeat in all competitions. Liverpool hadn’t lost five consecutive matches since September 1953, so Arne Slot’s team will face Eintracht Frankfurt in Wednesday’s Champions League clash with the aim of avoiding a defeat that would equal their worst streak in 72 years.

In the first 10 minutes we knew that they [Liverpool] would try to start the match very strongly. Also in the first half, we understood that they were under pressure when they had possession of the ball, the fans were putting them in a difficult position and booing them to make them play faster.

Bruno Fernandes
Fernandes highlighted that the fans’ anxiety contributed to their team’s victory. The Manchester United hadn’t achieved consecutive league wins in the same season since the end of the 2023-24 campaign.

It’s really embarrassing. It’s not a statistic we should be talking about, because it’s an embarrassing statistic to have.

Harry Maguire
Maguire also added: “Now that that’s out of the way, let’s try to do three on Saturday against Brighton, because we have to start being more consistent.” The United’s victory puts them two points behind Liverpool, who are in fourth place, and increases the chances of Amorim’s team fighting for Champions League qualification this season. However, when asked if United are now Champions League contenders, Amorim stated that it is too early to place his team in that category.

I want you to continue with the narrative you have, so I will not increase the objective. What we have to do is try to win three games in a row and then forget about the top four or six.

Amorim
Amorim added that the team remains focused on its objectives and that every detail of the match, including the spirit and the control, was perfect. “It’s really important for our fans. They suffered against Grimsby and Brentford, but today they saw a different team.”
