Rory McIlroy Aims to Captain the European Ryder Cup Team

Northern Irish golfer Rory McIlroy has expressed his desire to be captain of the European Ryder Cup team in the future, although not until the mid-2030s. McIlroy is participating this week in his first tournament in India, marking his return to competition after contributing to Europe’s victory in the Ryder Cup, where they defeated the United States in New York last month. The 36-year-old player has participated in the last eight editions of the Ryder Cup and, currently number 2 in the world and Masters champion, plans to continue being part of the team for a few more years, especially in the edition to be held in Ireland in 2027.

“Absolutely, I would love to be captain someday, and I feel very fortunate to have had a front-row seat playing under some of the best captains in history in the Ryder Cup,” McIlroy affirmed.

McIlroy mentioned Paul McGinley, the victorious captain of 2014, and Luke Donald, who led Europe in the last two tournaments. However, he added that his goal is to take on the captain’s role, hopefully, in the mid-2030s, if he manages to maintain good performance as a player. During the Ryder Cup, McIlroy was booed by American spectators at Bethpage Black. The golfer considers this situation regrettable, especially since Europe became the first team to win a Ryder Cup away from home since 2012. “I would like to change the narrative and focus on how good the European team was and how proud I was to be part of that team to win a Ryder Cup away from home,” he expressed. McIlroy also commented that he was really looking forward to playing in India, seeking to make his schedule “more international.” In November, he will participate in Abu Dhabi and in the European Tour’s season-ending tournament in Dubai, as well as the Australian Open in December. “I think in recent years I’ve enjoyed it even more. I’ve enjoyed traveling. I’ve enjoyed playing in front of people I’d never seen before,” he said. As a confessed cricket fan, McIlroy regretted not being able to attend a cricket match during his stay in India. “I would love to come back and do it,” he concluded.
