The Charlotte Hornets have made the decision to cut experienced point guard Spencer Dinwiddie, the team announced on Thursday.
Dinwiddie signed a one-year, $3.6 million contract with the Hornets in early July, during free agency. The franchise needed to free up guaranteed salary before the start of the regular season next week and chose to dispense with the player’s services to adjust its roster to a maximum of 15 standard contracts.
Dinwiddie only participated in two preseason games with Charlotte. Last season, he averaged 14.3 points and 6.2 assists in 30 games as a starter for the Dallas Mavericks.
In the 2024-25 season, he averaged 11 points, 4.4 assists, and 2.6 rebounds in 27 minutes per game, in 79 appearances with the Mavericks.
In his twelfth season in the NBA, Dinwiddie played a key role as the sixth man on the Mavs team that reached the Western Conference finals in 2022. He arrived at the team as part of the Kristaps Porzingis deal and was sent to the Brooklyn Nets a year later as part of the trade for Kyrie Irving.
Throughout his career, Dinwiddie has also played for the Detroit Pistons, Washington Wizards, and Los Angeles Lakers, averaging 13.0 points and 5.1 assists in 27.7 minutes per game, in 621 games (345 as a starter).
