Cristiano Ronaldo close to breaking records in the World Cup qualifiers
Portugal was just minutes away from securing their place in the 2026 World Cup thanks to the outstanding performance of Cristiano Ronaldo, who scored two goals in the 2-2 draw against Hungary in Lisbon this Tuesday.
Despite not achieving the victory that would secure their qualification, Ronaldo, the team’s star, broke another record in his already legendary career.
His first goal allowed him to surpass Carlos Ruiz of Guatemala as the top scorer in the World Cup qualifying phase, with a total of 40 goals. The second goal increased his record to 41 goals in 50 qualifying matches.
Ronaldo scored both goals in the first half, putting Portugal ahead after Hungary took the lead with a goal by Attila Szalai in the eighth minute. With Portugal leading 2-1, Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai scored in stoppage time of the second half, achieving a draw for the visitors and halting the celebration of Roberto Martínez’s team.
This result leaves Portugal with 10 points in four matches, while Hungary is in second place with five points. Ronaldo and his team could secure their qualification in November, when they complete the qualifying phase with matches against Ireland and Armenia.
The two goals also brought Ronaldo to a total of 948 goals in his career, adding clubs and national team. In addition, he has scored five or more goals in five of the six World Cup qualifying phases in which he has participated.
Ronaldo will be 41 years old for the 48-team World Cup to be held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico next summer, but he is expected to be part of the team that will seek to give Portugal its first title in the most important tournament in the world.
