Anthony Richardson out with orbital fracture
Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson Sr. could miss several games after suffering an orbital fracture in an unusual incident before Sunday’s game, according to sources close to the team.
The incident occurred when Richardson, who is the main backup for starter Daniel Jones, was doing his pre-game routine. A post to which he had attached a resistance band broke, hitting him hard in the face.
A source described the accident as “simply a freak accident”.
Misfortune left Richardson with serious injuries. The swelling is so considerable that his vision is temporarily affected, although it is not believed that there is damage to the eye.
Elastic bands are used by all Colts quarterbacks in the same way before each practice and game. Typically, on the field, the bands are tied to the goalposts. However, Sunday’s incident occurred in the locker room, where the stretching routine is sometimes carried out.
Meanwhile, the Colts are considering how to proceed at the quarterback position in the absence of Richardson.
Rookie Riley Leonard, selected in the sixth round of the draft from Notre Dame, is the only quarterback remaining on the roster.
According to a source, the Colts will evaluate the possibility of hiring a veteran to back up Jones, depending on Richardson’s recovery time. However, given the scarcity of options in free agency, Leonard is being considered for the position.
The Colts, who lead the NFL in scoring with 32.3 points per game, will face the Chargers in Los Angeles on Sunday in Week 7.
