George Russell: “I feel ready to fight for the championship”

After a remarkable victory at the Singapore Grand Prix on Sunday, Mercedes driver George Russell expressed his confidence in being ready to compete for the world title. This triumph represents Russell’s fifth career victory and the second of this season, following his success at the Canadian Grand Prix in June. The race took place on a circuit where Russell had an accident two years ago, losing the opportunity to win in the final laps. The driver considers his controlled performance on Sunday as proof of his progress.

I am a very different driver today than I was a couple of years ago, and I feel more complete, more confident. I know exactly what I need to do in every circumstance.

Russell added that, although he felt nervous before the race, he did not experience additional pressure. He felt it was just another race and was comfortable with the possibility of winning. Since joining Mercedes in 2022, Russell hasn’t had a car with which he can compete for championships. However, he has proven his worth, finishing very close to seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton and leading his rookie teammate, Kimi Antonelli, by a wide points margin after 18 races.

Russell attributes his maturity as a driver to the experience gained in the last two years. He believes that he now knows how to maximize each situation and feels more relaxed on the track.

I think it comes with experience, just knowing how to maximize each situation. I was probably driving a bit more tense a couple of years ago and probably pushing too hard in circumstances where I shouldn’t have.

Russell concluded that, faced with the rain before the race, he remained calm and focused on what he could control, demonstrating greater maturity compared to previous years.
