Jon Rahm and Shane Lowry Return with Difficulties at the Spanish Open

Jon Rahm and Shane Lowry’s return to action, after their participation in the Ryder Cup, was not as expected. Rahm even had a brief exchange with a marshal during the Spanish Open on Thursday. After a shot on the eighth hole, Rahm expressed his frustration with the condition of the course.

“What a day, what a day,” Rahm said, followed by an expression. The marshal, trying to encourage him, received a direct response: “Don’t tell me it’s okay, please. Thank you.”

Despite making a par on that hole, Rahm closed the day with a 72 (+1), including an eagle thanks to a shot from the bunker on the 14th hole, but with a low overall performance. Lowry, who also played in the same round, had a less outstanding performance, finishing with a 75 (+4). The Irishman accumulated six bogeys and two birdies. The provisional leaders were the Englishman Marco Penge and the Frenchman Frederic Lacroix, both with rounds of 66 (-5). Rahm seeks his fourth title at the Spanish Open, which would make him the most successful player in the tournament since the creation of the European circuit in 1972, surpassing Seve Ballesteros. Rahm already won the tournament in 2018, 2019 and 2022. The tournament this year offers an automatic spot for next year’s Masters and Open Championship to the winner. Spanish tennis player Carlos Alcaraz was present following Rahm’s opening round in Madrid.
