Surprise in Shanghai: Zverev falls to Rinderknech

The Shanghai Masters has witnessed an unexpected defeat. Alexander Zverev, seed number 3, was defeated by Arthur Rinderknech, who holds the 54th position in the world ranking, with a score of 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. Zverev, the highest-ranked player in the tournament, seemed to be in control after winning the first set. However, his performance declined, and he failed to break his opponent’s serve in the remaining sets. Rinderknech, for his part, secured the victory with a break of serve in the second set and two in the third, completing the triumph in more than two hours. This is not the first time Rinderknech has beaten Zverev this year, as he also defeated him at Wimbledon in a five-set match. Rinderknech, 30 years old, has had an outstanding season with 23 victories and reaches the fourth round for the third time in a Masters 1000 event. In the next phase, Rinderknech will face Jiri Lehecka, who defeated Denis Shapovalov with a score of 6-4, 6-4.

Alex De Minaur advances in Shanghai

Alex De Minaur, seeded number 7, achieved a victory against Kamil Majchrzak with a score of 6-1, 7-5, in high humidity conditions. This victory marks the number 36 on hard courts for De Minaur this year, leading the circuit. De Minaur broke Majchrzak’s serve on five occasions, securing his place in the fourth round of a Masters 1000 for the seventh time this season. Two of these breaks occurred after De Minaur lost his serve and found himself at a 4-3 disadvantage in the second set.

I went into this week knowing how difficult the conditions would be. The mindset is to survive, find ways, and prepare for the battle every time you go out on the court. There are no easy matches, especially in these conditions, so I’m glad I was able to keep my composure in the second set, get the break back, and finish it in two. If we had gone to a third, it would have been very physical.

His next rival will be Nuno Borges, who managed to defeat Shang Juncheng with scores of 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-3. If De Minaur gets another victory, he would reach 50 wins on the circuit in a season for the first time.

Auger-Aliassime and Musetti also advance

Felix Auger-Aliassime, seeded number 12, managed to overcome Jesper de Jong with a score of 6-4, 7-5, converting three out of four break points. Auger-Aliassime, who suffered a fall in the second set, was assisted by a ball boy. The Canadian player has a record of 10-2 in August, with both losses against Jannik Sinner. In his next match, Auger-Aliassime will face Lorenzo Musetti, eighth seed, who defeated his compatriot Luciano Darderi with a score of 7-5, 7-6 (1). Jannik Sinner, the defending champion, retired from his match against Tallon Griekspoor due to cramps, when the score was 7-6 (3), 5-7, 2-3 in favor of Griekspoor. Carlos Alcaraz, world number one and winner of the Japan Open last week, is not participating in Shanghai due to minor physical problems. In other results, American Learner Tien defeated Cameron Norrie with a score of 7-6(4), 6-3.
