Luke Hughes Secures Million-Dollar Contract with the Devils
The New Jersey Devils have reached an agreement with young defenseman Luke Hughes for a seven-year contract worth $63 million.
The announcement was made on Wednesday by General Manager Tom Fitzgerald. The deal stipulates that Hughes will have a $9 million cap hit through the 2031-32 NHL season. This represents one million dollars more annually than his brother and number one center, Jack.
Luke Hughes was one of the few restricted free agents who had not yet signed a contract less than a week before the start of the season. Last weekend, Anaheim reached an agreement with Mason McTavish, while Nashville’s Luke Evangelista has not yet finalized his contract.
The Devils’ training camp went on for almost two weeks without Hughes, who missed all sessions while his team and the team negotiated to secure his long-term stay in New Jersey. The 22-year-old player has accumulated 93 points in 155 regular season games so far.
Jack Hughes hopes Luke gets the opportunity, in his third full year in the league, to lead the power play unit and play a lot of minutes.
