At the Philadelphia 76ers’ media day, stars Joel Embiid and Paul George shared updates on their recovery from the respective knee surgeries they underwent.

Joel Embiid’s Status

Embiid, who underwent arthroscopic surgery in April, reported feeling “pretty good” and being in a day-to-day recovery process. The NBA MVP in the 2022-23 season, was limited to 19 games due to a left knee injury and a foot sprain, ending his participation in the season in February. He averaged 23.8 points per game, his lowest figure since the 2019-20 season, and 8.2 rebounds, the fewest since his rookie year in 2016-17.

There is not necessarily an expectation; it’s more about making sure everything is okay and doing everything correctly, and then going from there,” Embiid said. “Obviously, the goal is to play consistently and not be in the position we were in last year.

When asked about possible adjustments on the court to avoid injuries, Embiid emphasized his intense style of play on both sides of the court, highlighting his desire to do what it takes to win. Daryl Morey, the franchise’s president of basketball operations, indicated that medical guidelines and listening to Embiid’s body will be followed to manage his return. The head coach, Nick Nurse, expressed his hope of having more options to manage Embiid’s availability this season, which would mean he could play more than the previous year.

Paul George’s Situation

Paul George underwent an arthroscopic procedure in July and a reevaluation is expected in September. The player, who signed a four-year, $212 million maximum contract with the 76ers in the summer of 2024, has been dealing with various ailments. Last season, he received injections in his left adductor and left knee, which forced him to end his participation in March.

I’m feeling better and better. Feeling stronger and stronger,” said George. “These next few weeks are very important, leading up to the start of the season, opening night, all that. All I can do is focus on doing that, day in and day out, taking it one day at a time. I think I’ll be in a good place, hopefully, sooner rather than later.

George indicated that he can do “almost everything, except full contact”. Although he won’t be completely ready for the start of training camp, the inflammation in his knee is decreasing. Last season, George averaged 16.2 points per game, his lowest figure since the six-game campaign in 2014-15.

Other players

Jared McCain, the Sixers’ first-round pick in 2024, suffered a UCL tear in his right thumb during a workout, after recovering from a meniscus injury in his left knee. The team is working with doctors to determine his return time. Quentin Grimes, who could have a more important role due to McCain’s absence, was not present on media day. According to reports, he is unlikely to travel with the team to Abu Dhabi for the preseason games due to a standstill in contract negotiations. Morey expects a resolution in the coming days.
