New Winds in the Celtics: Bill Chisholm Takes the Reins

The Boston Celtics are preparing for a smooth ownership transition, largely thanks to the continuity of their management core. Bill Chisholm, the new owner, has assured that he will not interfere with the team’s success, maintaining confidence in the team that has won two NBA championships in the last two decades.

“We will do everything possible to win championships and raise more banners,” Chisholm stated in a press conference, accompanied by Wyc Grousbeck, the previous owner; Rich Gotham, current president; and Brad Stevens, president of basketball operations.

Chisholm, a Massachusetts native with a background in private equity, leads the group that acquired the Celtics for a record $6.1 billion, a transaction unanimously approved by the NBA last month. The new owner emphasized that the opportunity to acquire his favorite team was too good to pass up. Grousbeck, who led the purchase of the Celtics in 2002 for $360 million, will remain with the team as CEO for five years, and will remain involved after that period. More than half of the former ownership group will remain in the organization, along with Stevens, Gotham and coach Joe Mazzulla. Chisholm has made it clear who is in charge: “There is a governor, and the governor has the last word, and that’s me. Ultimately, I am responsible.” Chisholm also expressed his support for the idea of a WNBA team in Boston, although the league has not yet given the green light. He was also pleased with the TD Garden, where the Celtics share the court with the Boston Bruins of the NHL, highlighting the importance of this venue for the team, the players, and the fans. In the press conference, Aditya Mittal, CEO of ArcelorMittal, was also present, who recalled his first visit to Boston and his connection with the Celtics since the 1980s. The Celtics’ future is influenced by the salary cap. Chisholm takes control of the team at a time of transition, two seasons after their last title. Jayson Tatum is recovering from an injury and the team made key trades this summer to avoid financial penalties. Stevens explained that these decisions were made to maintain flexibility in the roster. Chisholm has conveyed the message to the basketball management of “going all-in, but in a sensible way”.
