Tiafoe and Shapovalov Suffer Surprising Defeats at the Japan Open

In a day full of surprises at the Japan Open, Frances Tiafoe and Denis Shapovalov, seeded players, suffered unexpected defeats in the first round of the tournament.

Tiafoe, the eighth seed, failed to maintain his level against qualifier Marton Fucsovics, who took the victory with scores of 3-6, 6-1, 7-5. Tiafoe’s frustration was evident as he broke his racket after the defeat.

This defeat marks the fourth consecutive for the American tennis player, who has seen a drop in his ranking to the number 29 position.

Fucsovics will advance to the next round and will face the winner of the match between Jordan Thompson and Brandon Nakashima.

For his part, Denis Shapovalov, seeded number seven, also fell defeated against Daniel Altmaier with a score of 7-5, 6-3. Altmaier will face the winner of the match between Damir Dzumhur and Aleksandar Vukic in the next phase.
