Denny Hamlin Dominates at Gateway and Advances in NASCAR Playoffs

NASCAR star driver Denny Hamlin once again demonstrated his focus and skill by securing a dominant victory at the World Wide Technology Raceway on Sunday, ensuring his advancement in the Cup Series playoffs. Despite facing personal and professional challenges, Hamlin remained focused and achieved a near-perfect weekend, starting from the pole position and leading most of the race.

“I just keep grinding,” Hamlin said after his fifth win of the season. “All I can do is continue to be a student of the game, continue to try to get better, and each week is an opportunity to get a little bit better.”

With his 59th career victory, Hamlin advanced to the second round of the playoffs, joining his Joe Gibbs Racing teammate, Chase Briscoe, who finished second. Chase Elliott completed the podium, followed by Ryan Blaney and Joey Logano, demonstrating the supremacy of the playoff drivers on this 1.25-mile circuit. The strategy of the No. 11 Toyota team was key, taking Hamlin to the pits for his last stop with 44 laps remaining. Hamlin took the lead on the restart, securing the victory and marking Toyota’s 200th win in NASCAR’s premier series. Hamlin celebrated with a long burnout, enjoying the reaction of the public and embracing his villain role in NASCAR. Hamlin, who is also a podcast co-host and co-owner of the 23XI Racing team with NBA legend Michael Jordan, has managed to balance multiple roles without affecting his performance on the track. In Gateway, Hamlin became the seventh driver in NASCAR history with multiple wins after his 700th start. The team owner, Joe Gibbs, marvels at how Hamlin, at 45 years old and with a growing family, manages so many responsibilities.

The ultimate prize would be a Cup championship, and Hamlin took another step toward that goal by clinching a spot in the next round before the September 13 race at Bristol Motor Speedway. After Gateway, Shane van Gisbergen, Austin Dillon, Alex Bowman, and Josh Berry are outside the top twelve. After a twelfth-place finish at Gateway, Kyle Larson can secure a spot in the next round simply by starting at Bristol. Bubba Wallace, who finished eighth after leading 73 of 240 laps and winning the second stage, is also in a solid position to advance. Berry will need a win at Bristol to advance to the next round after debuting in the Cup playoffs with two consecutive last-place finishes. The Wood Brothers Racing driver was hit in the left rear by Elliott, causing Berry’s No. 21 Ford to spin into the wall on lap 36. Elliott apologized for the incident after the race. Previously, NASCAR announced the passing of Bill Davis, whose teams won 40 races in the Cup, Xfinity, and Truck series from 1993 to 2008.
