Surprise at SummerSlam! CM Punk, after conquering the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, saw his reign cut short in just five minutes and ten seconds. Seth Rollins, with crutches and the support of Paul Heyman, appeared on the entrance ramp, unleashing uncertainty in the audience.
The “Ruse of the Century”
Rollins, feigning a knee injury, surprised everyone by getting rid of the crutches and knee brace to run towards the ring. Before the astonished gaze of more than 53,000 fans at MetLife Stadium, Rollins cashed in his Money in the Bank briefcase, snatching the championship from Punk. This bold move, which Rollins called “The Ruse of the Century”, emulated the “Heist of the Century” of WrestleMania 31, where he was also crowned champion.
The deception began at a televised event, where Rollins feigned an injury during a match. This incident, added to an appearance on “The Rich Eisen Show”, where he talked about his supposed injury, consolidated the credibility of the hoax. Even his daughter, Roux, was part of the plan, although she sometimes had difficulty keeping the secret. When you have the biggest trade of all time, it’s pretty hard to top it. I had to find a way to do it differently, still create a great moment but be able to separate the two in a way and make them equal.
